Most visitors say "Punta Cana" for the whole eastern tip of the Dominican Republic, from Cap Cana in the south to Uvero Alto in the north. The areas differ a lot in atmosphere, walkability and distance from the airport (PUJ). Here’s how they compare.

Bávaro
The heart of Punta Cana tourism. Most big resorts line Bávaro beach, and the area has malls, supermarkets and many restaurants. It’s a safe default if you want everything nearby.
Los Corales
Part of Bávaro, but different in feel: a compact, walkable neighbourhood of condos and small hotels with beach bars. It’s one of the best areas for staying without an all-inclusive if you don’t want to rent a car.
Cap Cana
A large private development with a marina, golf courses, upscale villas and hotels, and Juanillo beach. It’s polished and quiet, and close to the airport. Prices are higher, and distances inside are big.
Arena Gorda
A long beach north of Bávaro dominated by large all-inclusives. Great if you plan to stay inside your resort; less so if you want to explore on foot.
Cana Bay and the Hard Rock area
Further north near Macao is Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana and, beside it, Cana Bay, a residential and golf community built around Hard Rock Golf Club. Beach access is via the Cana Bay Beach Club. The area suits:
- golfers who want to be near the course
- travellers who want the Hard Rock atmosphere but prefer an apartment in the Hard Rock resort area to a hotel room
- people who want resort-style grounds without an all-inclusive package
You’ll want a car or taxis for eating out in Bávaro. The nearest public beach is Macao Beach, a short drive north.
Uvero Alto
The far north: newer resorts, wide empty beaches and very little else. Ideal for switching off; less ideal if you want to explore. Transfers from the airport take the longest.
