“All-inclusive” covers food, drinks, pools, the water park and nightly entertainment, but some of the things the resort is famous for cost extra:

• Golf. The hotel’s FAQ is explicit: golf is not part of the all-inclusive. Green fees at Hard Rock Golf Club are separate.
• Spa treatments at the Rock Spa.
• The casino, obviously. Entry is free; the gambling isn’t.
• Excursions off the property: catamarans, buggies, Saona Island.

• Variety. Nine restaurants and 23 bars mean a week without repeating a dinner.
• The water park and pools. For children and teenagers, Rockaway Bay alone can justify the trip.

• Zero planning. You never check a bill, book a taxi or think about dinner.

• Size works both ways. 1,775 rooms means long walks, busy pools and queues at popular restaurants in high season. It’s not a place for an intimate getaway.

If you do book Hard Rock: five tips

1. Pick your building wisely. The resort is huge; ask for a location near the pools or restaurants you’ll use most.
2. Reserve à la carte dinners early. The popular restaurants fill up in high season.
3. Check what your rate includes before arrival, especially if you plan golf, spa days or room upgrades.
4. Avoid the obvious peak weeks (Christmas, New Year, Easter) if you can. Value is much better either side of them.
5. Leave the resort once. Macao Beach is minutes away and shows a completely different side of Punta Cana.

Hard Rock Punta Cana is worth it when you’re the traveller it was built for: someone who wants a big, busy, everything-included resort and will use it from breakfast to closing time. If that’s you, book it and enjoy it. If you mainly want the location, the beach and a taste of the Hard Rock experience, you can have all three without paying for the full package.
